Even before the pandemic, online shopping was gaining in popularity, but stay-at-home recommendations have significantly changed the way people shop, and shoppers who did not shop online because they preferred to shop in a physical store had to take the plunge. Now with physical stores reopening, online shopping growth is likely to slow and return to pre-pandemic levels.
Consume only things
People have been forced to stay at home, and their choice has been to only consume “stuff” instead of having experiences. This high consumption of things has increased the pressure on supply chains and has increased the demand for shipments so much that there are not enough containers in circulation and the costs are high.
Consumption is still high, causing container ships to be always overbooked, although there are alternatives to maritime transport, such as: air transport, road transport and rail. Due to the current pandemic, there are fewer international flights, which means less air capacity to transport cargo. For the same reasons, there is also a shortage of drivers and those who are working are delayed by regulations requiring COVID tests and border closures.
The demand for products purchased through e-commerce continues to grow, but expectations regarding delivery times are also increasing. Without considering the idea of simply going to a store and getting the items they want, consumers expect delivery of their online purchases almost immediately. There is a need for a technology solution to help address the pressure on supply chains.
RFID Tracking
What would help the operation of logistics is to know where things are in the supply chain and how much there is. This is that the products or shipments must be traceable as they move. GPS trackers are an expensive option and it is not profitable for a single item.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is a cost-effective system that uses wireless signals to transfer data between a microchip and a reading device to identify and track objects. Its most common use is in microchips for pets or public transport cards, but it offers to be very effective in supply chains.
For the tracking of goods and shipments, the best option is to transfer data by scanning an RFID tag because it can store more information than barcodes. The data is read remotely at a distance of up to 12 meters and the goods are read in groups. An entire pallet load of RFID-tagged products can be ready in one go. An identification code is assigned to each item, and this code can be overwritten, individual products can be tracked and their location updated during their journey.
RFID technology is one step away from being integrated into supply chains in all logistics and transportation sectors. Because with a single office printing device, it’s easy and cost-effective to print and encode shipping and delivery bills or global freight bills and RFID labels in just one operation. The paper that labels, bills and receipts are printed on is recycled and the RFID chips are reusable, they can go through a printer again and re-encode as many times as needed on an office printer and track individual items or entire shipments throughout the world. throughout the supply chain.
To track where the product is, it is possible with printed RFID tracking.
